The parade was very organized and well prepared. There were about fifty units in the parade. Scott Gladson did a fine job in arranging and promoting the parade. Around the barbecue table some of the old timers began to remember the very beginning of the first fire department of its kind in Craven County. The ’ ^nceboro Fire District was barbecue dinner that has become tradition with each Fireman’s Day In Vanceboro. Mr. Lancaster claims the distinction of the only fireman that has ever been shot while attending a fire. from Bridgeton to Pitt and Beaufort County iines. The department was incorporated in October 1959 and that week the group announced the purchase of a $11,400 fire truck from W.S. Darley Company in Chicago. The chassis for the fire truck was purchased from Whitford Motor, Inc. and was to be delivered to Chicago for outfitting. A second piece of equipment was a tanker truck which had been secured by Principal E. P. Blair of the Vanceboro Schools. The county gave it to the town, and the town gave it to the department. The estimated water available on the two Ersell Nobles, Jimmy Huff, Edwin Robinson, Billy Whitford, Grover Lancaster, Jr., Glenn Franks, Dewey Jordan, Robert Wilson, Charlie Neal, Lawrence Lancaster, and Mayor Jatha McLawhorn made up the first Board of Directors of the department, and out of this group Grover Lancaster, Jr. was named the first depart ment president; Edwin Robinson, Vice President; Jimmy Huff, Secretary; and Ersell Nobles, Treasurer. Others in attendance for that first organizational meeting were Wade Adams, Pete Hoell, Willie Gray Ipock, W.E. Elaine Moore, the proud winner of the 19" Color TV given by the Fire Department Football Contest Winners 5th Week Virginia O'Carroll came in first (12-3) winning $10 and 6 points; 2nd place winner was Ronnie Brinson (12-3) $5 and 4 points; and in third place was Al Perry (11-4) $2 and 4 points. trucks was 2,500 gallons.
